In collaboration with Boswell Book Festival

The Founder and Artistic Director of The Cumnock Tryst is 60 this year and his birthday is being marked with concerts and festival programmes at home and abroad. Here at the Tryst, James Knox, Chair of Boswell Book Festival, will interview Phillip Cooke about his new book, The Music of James MacMillan, and lead a discussion between Phillip and James MacMillan about this first in-depth look at his life, work and aesthetic. From his beginnings in rural Ayrshire, the book explores MacMillan’s compositional influences over time. It looks closely at his most significant works and sets them in a wider context defined by contemporary composition, culture and the arts in general.

We have an ongoing, fruitful relationship with our sister festival in East Ayrshire, the Boswell Book Festival. We are delighted to welcome back its Chair James Knox to host this literary hour. Phillip Cooke has researched my music in depth over the last few years and the result is a book which looks at my work, influences and inspirations. It’s quite scary, really!
